The Detroit Lions have been punished by the NFL following a mistake made during their recent OTAs.
The team was forced to skip Monday’s practice because they facilitated on-field contact during the week of May 27.
They announced as much on Saturday, admitting they had been admonished by the league.
“On Friday evening the organization was made aware by the NFL and NFLPA that Organized Team Activities (OTA) practices held the week of May 27 violated player work rules pertaining to on-field physical contact pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement,” they posted to social media.
“As a result, the team’s OTA practice scheduled for Monday, June 10 has been forfeited. We take very seriously the rules set forth within the NFL’s Offseason Program and have worked to conduct our practices accordingly. We will continue to be vigilant with our practices moving forward.”
The Detroit Lions Return To Practice On Tuesday
The collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA prohibits live contact and tackling during OTAs. As a result, the NFC North champs have had to give up a day of practice.
They return to the field this Tuesday.
Players and staff will return to offseason break after wrapping up and return for training camp late next month.
The Detroit Lions ended the recent 2023 NFL season with a 12-5 record and made it as far as the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 after appearing to be well on their way to the Super Bowl in the early going.
