Pat McAfee Address Controversy Around His Comments on Caitlin Clark & The WNBA-lh

Yesterday, while discussing sports, I used a term to describe Caitlin Clark that I shouldn’t have. To fully explain the situation would take about 15 to 20 minutes. If you haven’t heard about it, you probably haven’t been online or watching the news. During a segment of a new game show, I referred to Caitlin Clark as “white ” in what I intended as a complimentary manner, highlighting her superstar status in Indiana. I didn’t realize the impact of my words until hours later when I saw the reaction online. I felt terrible and spent the next day feeling like the worst person on earth.

I want to apologize to those who found my words offensive. I never intended to come across as racist, se.xist, or disrespectful towards Caitlin. In fact, just before my comment, I was emphasizing the need for more respect towards her in the WNBA. I reached out to Caitlin Clark to apologize, and she graciously accepted. I’ve learned a lot from this experience.

Moving forward, I’ll be more mindful of my language, especially when discussing topics like women’s sports. I realize now that the way I express myself might not be interpreted the same way by everyone. I also want to apologize to my colleagues for involving them in this situation.

I appreciate those who pointed out my mistake and helped me see things from a different perspective. I’m committed to learning and improving from this experience as we continue to cover sports on our show.
