Man, 21, says he’s mistaken for a woman ‘every day’ because of his ‘androgynous’ looks – as he opens up about shocking encounters he’s had with strangers left stunned by his ‘feminine’ appearance

A cisgender man claims he is mistaken for a woman ‘every day’ thanks to his naturally ‘androgynous’ looks, while opening up about the shocking encounters he has had with strangers over his feminine appearance – some of whom have gone as far as to ask if he is ‘transitioning’.

Despite being born a male and identifying as a male, Lucas McCarson revealed people regularly ask if he was born female or is a transgender woman.

The 21-year-old Kentucky-based barista, went viral after recounting one particularly striking exchange he had with a customer who believed he had transitioned – adding that the experience has made him more sympathetic with transgender people.

In the clip, which garnered nine million views, Lucas said the unnamed woman in question mistook him for a transgender woman, before telling him: ‘God can bring you back from this.’

Lucas shared a video of himself recounting the story on TikTok, where he explained that the customer ‘looked him up and down’, grabbed hold of his hands and said: ‘As a Christian woman, I feel determined to let you know that God has you in his hands.’

He explained: ‘Usually the type of people who feel the need to say that, especially to people who look like me, are usually of the hating genre.’

Because he didn’t want to cause a scene and draw even more attention to himself, Lucas noted that he just thanked her because he was unsure of what else to say.

However, when the customer added, ‘Know that God can bring you back from… this,’ Lucas confessed he was somewhat thrown off – but not surprised.

The 21-year-old said that the experience is normal for him, adding: ‘I learned to flow with my androgyny instead of feeling like it was holding me back.

‘I am both a balance of feminine and masculine, because there are no rules. I just happen to look the way I do and I take that as a blessing.

‘I am mistaken for a woman every day, in almost everything I do. I was mistaken for a woman all the way back to middle school, even with short hair.

‘I have been blessed with my mom’s Filipino genes. I think I have the perfect combination of culturally feminine characteristics.’

And despite not acting or dressing like a woman, he said that strangers can’t help but to point out the 21-year-old’s feminine traits.

He admitted: ‘No matter how I dress or act, people automatically assume I am a woman. As a cis-man who has never had to transition, it made me feel extremely insecure.

‘I have never identified with anything other than my assigned gender, so I often find myself angry when people look at me and often treat me as a woman/trans person.

‘I wake up like this. I don’t “dress up as a woman.” I put clothes on. I don’t “talk like a woman.” I just speak.’

And while the incidents that see him being mistaken for a different gender are often upsetting, Lucas noted that it has helped him gain insight into how trans people feel on a daily basis.

Lucas shared: ‘As a cisgender man, this gives me insight into how women and trans people are treated every day, and though I do not live my life as a woman, I understand how much respect women deserve and how much courage and resilience they have.’
