The Kansas City Chiefs have made a curious addition to their receiver room as they’ve signed Geor’quarius Spivey a tight end with a name no one’s ever going to forget, given that it’s straight out of a ‘Key & Peele’ sketch.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a quick decision after losing TE Izaiah Gathings to a hamstring injury on Wednesday after he joined the te am last month, presenting star quarterback Patrick Mahomes with another option to throw to.

KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson first reported that the reigning Super Bowl champions signed Geor’Quarius Spivey after a successful workout.

Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest has since relayed that Spivey is wearing the No. 85 jersey, previously assigned to Gathings, at training camp. However, there were no matching roster moves at the time of the signing.

Of course, social media had some things to say:

Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes’ New TE Target Had An Interesting 2023

Geor’Quarius Spivey is a two-time SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll student-athlete but wasn’t able to play last season due to eligibility issues. The NCAA didn’t approve his transfer waiver from TCU back to Mississippi State, though he still practiced with the Bulldogs.

The TE made 28 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown in college, with most of it coming during his senior year with the Horned Frogs.

Patrick Mahomes’ new target is not as big as the typical TE, measuring just under 6ft 5in and weighing 238 pounds. However, he makes for an intriguing prospect as he clocked a 40-yard dash time of 4.58 seconds and a 10-foot broad jump.

It’s great to see him catch a break after what happened to him last season. Let’s hope he makes the most of it.
