Two years ago, Monique shared her experience of being molested by her brother and used that pain in her Oscar-winning performance in “Precious.” She expressed her discomfort with Oprah Winfrey inviting her family onto her show, against her wishes, leading to a falling out between them. Monique felt exploited by executives and labeled as difficult by Oprah after declining unpaid press obligations. Monique confronted Oprah at an Oscars party about inviting her family on the show, causing tension between them. Despite Oprah’s public apology, Monique feels unheard and believes that black women speaking up often goes ignored until after their death. Monique has been outspoken about her experiences and desires resolution with Oprah and others involved.
